I Pledge Allegiance

I pledge allegiance to the Kingdom of the slaughtered lamb.

I pledge allegiance to a Kingdom of outcasts, sinners, degenerates, and nobodies.

I pledge allegiance to a Kingdom in which everyone is invited to the banquet table.

I pledge allegiance to a Kingdom in which forgiveness and grace reign.

I pledge allegiance to a Kingdom of weakness and lowliness.

I pledge allegiance to a Kingdom of mutual love.

This Kingdom requires all of my allegiance.

Therefore,

I cannot pledge allegiance to a flag that represents an empire of military might.

I cannot pledge allegiance to a flag that represents an empire of  prestige, glamour, and riches.

I cannot pledge allegiance to a flag that represents an empire that is founded on the exclusion of others or, even more, the oppression of people who find themselves on the wrong side of Manifest Destiny or the Free Market.

I cannot pledge allegiance to a flag that represents an empire that responds to evil with more evil and violence with more violence.

I cannot pledge allegiance to a flag that represents an empire that ignores the least of these and, instead, favors the powerful and well-to-do.

I cannot pledge allegiance to a flag that represents an empire of hierarchy and top-down power.

————————————

“Every war…with all its ordinary consequences…the murder with the justifications of its necessity and justice, the exaltation and glorification of military exploits, the worship of the flag, the patriotic sentiments…and so on, does more in one year to pervert men’s minds than thousands of robberies, murders, and arsons perpetrated during hundreds of years by individual men under the influence of passion.” – Leo Tolstoy
